Rich Chinese are hiring American surrogate mothers for quite the paycheck. On Sept. 23, The Telegraph reported that some wealthy Chinese families are paying up to $120,000 for this new fad of having a "designer" American baby. Apparently the demand for American surrogates is on the rise and has been since 2011. It is unknown how many Chinese families have contacted surrogacy agencies in the U.S., but the number must be significant for a national news flash.
"Surrogacy agencies in China and the United States are catering to wealthy Chinese who want a baby outside the country's restrictive family planning policies, who are unable to conceive themselves, or who are seeking US citizenship for their children," The Telegraph reports.
The rich Chinese families looking for American mothers to carry their fetus' have caused quite the uptick in business. In fact, several agencies in the U.S. have added Chinese-language options to their websites and have hired Mandarin speakers to assist in many of their cases. In fact, 65% of all cases at many of these agencies are said to be from Chinese families living overseas.
It is believed that this is happened because "prospective Chinese clients almost always want to chose U.S. citizenship for their babies, while other agencies pointed to a desire to have children educated in the United States," according to Circle-Surrogacy (a Boston-based agency) president, John Weltman.
Rich Chinese are paying big for American mothers... in fact, the total package (including airfare and other expenses you might not think of) can cost upwards of $300,000!
