The Rice Owls women’s soccer team took 21 shots in Friday’s season debut, but none of them found the back of the net.
Rice fell to Stephen F. Austin 1-0 at Rice Soccer Stadium in the season opener for both squads.
The scoring difference was a goal in the 72nd minute by freshman Hailey Hunt. Hunt kicked the short goal on the right-hand side following a pass by Dallas Brown.
The Owls took nine shots on goal, but Ladyjacks goalkeepers Lacey Lee and Morgan Glick snatched them up.
Junior midfielder Gabriela Iribarne led Rice with eight shots, including two on goal. Iribarne only took 29 shots all of last season. Rice sophomore forward Lauren Hughes also took two shots on goal Friday, and had five shots overall.
Rice goalkeeper Amy Czyz recorded four saves on the evening.
The victory was the first for Stephen F. Austin coach Wally Crittenden. The former Texas A&M assistant replaced Tony Amato who stepped down in December to coach at Arizona.
Rice will hit the road Labor Day weekend for games at Western Kentucky and Vanderbilt. The next home game is Sept. 13 against Lamar.
