Ricardo's Place: Bringing a families tradition to San Juan Capistrano, CA from Jalisco and Sonora, Mexico.
This story is about Ricardo Beas, owner of Ricardo's Place in the lovely community of San Juan Capistrano, CA. I have had the pleasure to dine at Ricardo's Place for the past five years and have always loved the experience of homestyle restaurant dining with tasty food, terrific margaritas and great customer service. Ricardo Beas is a business entrepreneur and has two additional restaurant locations; La Cocina de Ricardo in Lake Forest, CA and El Paso Cafe in Mountain View, CA. Ricardo opened the San Juan Capistrano restaurant in 2003. The original name was La Cocina de Ricardo, however he gave this name to his restaurant in Lake Forest, CA.
Ricardo and his family arrived in Orange County in 1970. A couple of years later when Ricardo was only 14 years old, he found a job as a dishwasher at Pete and Clara's Restaurant which amazingly is now Ricardo's Place. For Ricardo and his family, this is their American Dream come true.......
I joined Ricardo for a delightful lunch and the special chance to learn more of his background to share with others. Ricardo was born in Mixtlan, Jalisco, Mexico. Through his youthful years, his grandmother, Juana, was a very good chef. She loved cooking and was thought of very highly by the high society community. She became very famous for her homemade and delicious recipes and prepared and catered many weddings and special events. Her true strength and success comes from her heart. She believed in excellence in all endeavors and said the real success comes from “the wheel in life.” Ricardo shares that this expression means that all involved in an endeavor must be a part of the whole to make a real success. Juana always had special recipes and dishes of food ready for all family remembers. Everything was homemade, fresh and just delicious. It became a wish for the family to come to America and to live the American Dream. Ricardo recalls this memory and the wish became true when the family moved to Mission Viejo in 1970.
Ricardo and his family carried Grandma Juana's traits to his restaurants today. He shared with me that the family structure he was raised in was so special that he wanted to carry this tradition into his business and wants his customers to feel like they are guests in his home.
The recipes were carried down to Ricardo's mother, Alicia, and she has become the main chef at the San Juan Capistrano, CA restaurant. Some of the favorite items are Carnitas, Fajitas, Mole and Caldo de Albondigas Soup (meat ball soup with vegetables).
Ricardo's Place is open 6 days a week and closed on Monday's. A Happy Hour menu including food and beverages is available all day Wednesday's and Thursday's. Sunday is great day for dining and live music is offered from 10am – 2pm by Julio Montero, a beautiful harpist.

The restaurant has a separate dining room that can hold up to 45 guests. This is a wonderful place for planning a special event to remember. I had a birthday celebration recently and my guests and myself felt like we were special guests at the home of Ricardo Beas and his family.
