Monarcas Morelia returned to the winner’s circle in the initial game of week 3 of the Clausura 2014 of La Liga MX. The current Copa MX champions defeated Tigres UANL 2-0 at the Morelos Stadium winning their first game of the season elevating them to 4 points. Tigres on the other hand, remain at the bottom of the league table and may stay there depending on what Atlante FC does during their game.

The first half was full of action with both keepers having to stay on their toes to keep the opposing team from creating any damage. For Morelia, Carlos Rodriguez sent several shots away or depended on his defense line to keep his sheet clean. Alan Pulido had a clear set up in the 27 but decided to take the shot himself sending the ball wide. Danilinho also had a shot but the hero was Rodriguez who kept the ball from entering his net.

Morelia did not have a clean shot until the 36th minute when Panamanian Felipe Baloy centered to Duvier Riascos who simply pushed the ball past the keeper. However, the Colombian was inches offside and the linesman raised his flag to annul the goal.

It was Riascos who initiated the play that brought the first goal. He took the ball at midfield and passed to Rodrigo Salinas. Salinas took the ball down the line and centered to Riascos who was running in like a runaway freight train to head the ball into the net for the 1-0. The game went to break with the home side leading.

Five minutes into the second half the referee called a foul in Morelia’s favor. Carlos Adrian Morales took the shot and fired to the top right corner to put the ball past the keeper for the 2-0.

Tigres suffered an injury minutes later when Jorge “Guti” Estrada was taken off the pitch after he attempted to recover a ball that was out of his reach. He was replaced by U.S. international Jose Torres on defense.

The problems did not ease-off for Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti’s team. Brazilian Juninho pulled Riascos down on last approach in the 77th minute. Since Riascos was the last man on the run the referee booked Juninho for the second time and pulled a red card to leave Tigres a man down on the field. The night was not over for the Monterrey-based team when Dario Burbano hit Salinas from behind. The red card was direct and left the felinos with two key players out for the next game day due to bookings and one due to injury. Monarcas claimed the victory.

Morelia will travel to Tijuana for their next game, then will host Santa Fe of Colombia in Copa Libertadores. Tigres will face Pumas UNAM in week 4 action but must take on Atletico San Luis in the Copa MX midweek.
