When it was announced that Lucasfilm had been acquired by Disney and that a new sequel trilogy of Stars Wars films were on the horizon, fans were skeptical, some of that was diffused by the hiring of JJ Abrams as the director of Episode VII, as well as the return of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford.
The question still remained however if this new trilogy would take the lead of the first and have three separate directors helm the movies. Alongside the spinoff films that are to be directed by Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank, today we have found out who will direct Episode VIII.
Today Disney announced that Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick, AMC’s Breaking Bad) has been tapped to direct and write Episode VIII. Johnson will also write a treatment for Episode IX. Johnon himself seemed to confirm the news by tweeting out the scene from The Right Stuff where Scott Glenn prays that he “doesn’t f@#k everything up” .
This is a great big break for Johnson, who has excelled for years with smaller films like Brick, and got a foray into larger films with 2012’s Looper. Johnson also received acclaim for the many episodes of Breaking Bad that he directed, including season 5B’s “Ozymandias” which received universal critical and viewer acclaim and is hailed as one of the best drama episodes of all time by some.
Congratulations to Rian Johnson on landing the gig, it certainly is an exciting adventure for sure and one that hopefully works out for him.
