Rescuing a Flood Victim
Photos: RI school cancellations are already being announced due to record rainfall flood totals. Road closures are preventing school buses in Coventry, West Warwick, Warwick, East Greenwich, and many other towns, from getting kids to school and back safely. Road closings and power outages as well as health safety is a major concern - for home and at school. The Sewerage Treatment Plant in Warwick and others in the state are in danger of being compromised, which means raw sewerage backing up into houses, or spilling out onto the ground water. Flood Stage Predictions for Pawtuxet and Blackstone Rivers by the National Weather Service
The Blackstone River in Woonsocket was predicted to hit 18 feet at 2 a.m. and then start to recede. The Scituate Reservoir Dam was dumping approximately 31,000 gallons of water per second into the North Branch of the Pawtuxet River, making the predicted crest higher at 20 feet by about 2:00am. That's an additional 11 feet over the flood stage of 9.0 feet. Governor Donald Carcieri and state officials expect the 2010 Rhode Island flooding to be the worst to hit the state in more than 100 years. "The worst is still ahead of us," he said during a broadcast carried live on the state's major TV stations. 'We're in a serious, serious situation.'"
