Fans of “Real Housewives of Orange County” weren’t disappointed when part one of the reunion special aired Monday night. The cast members exploded into a yelling match and made some accusations. But longtime cast member Vicki Gunvalson took the spotlight when a viewer called in and asked to explain what gay “looks like” on the show.
The question arose as a result of a recent event filmed for the show. The 52-year-old Gunvalson asked a man at the even if he was married to his female guest. When he answered by telling her he was gay, a surprised Gunvalson later said on air that he didn’t look gay at all. The longtime housewife tried to elaborate on what she meant with the comment.
She said, “Usually, they’re very, very, very fit. They’re usually very GQ looking. They’re very poised. Not to generalize, but what was my viewpoint.” Then she went on to explain to host Andy Cohen, who is openly gay, that the guy in the scene didn’t have a gaydar and told Cohen he didn’t have one either because he is “all boy” to her. The comment left Cohen speechless and also left a confused look on his face, both because of the insult and because the word “gaydar” was used out of context.
Gunvalson’s comments were probably not intended to be taken as offensive, but it did show how some perceive homosexuality as something other than masculine. It wasn’t the first time issues related to sexuality has come up on a reunion special. NeNe Leakes was questioned about comments she made about Kenya Moore’s gay friend Brandon on “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” reunion and Joe Giudice’s anti-gay slurs were addressed on a past “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” reunion special.
