Named as the official state fruit of Ohio, the vitamin C-packed tomato is being celebrated at the free, 49th annual Tomato Festival in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. The best news -- the Festival is only a 2 hour drive from Cleveland so tomato lovers, rejoice!

A Bit About Reynoldsburg It was in 1965 that the Franklin County Historical Society named Reynoldsburg as the birthplace of the commercial tomato. Now every year the town presents the Festival in remembrance of that proclamation, attracting thousands of visitors from all over the state of Ohio.

This year's Festival takes place on Friday, August 15 and Saturday, August 16 and will be held at Huber Park.

Some Interesting Facts About Tomatoes Ohio is the 3rd leading producer of tomatoes in the country and it is estimated that more than 85% of home gardeners include tomatoes in their gardens.

Reynoldsburg Tomato Festival Among the activities at the Tomato Festival will be viewing tomato displays and there will be tomato contests where participants and their entries will be vying for prizes in categories like Largest Tomato, Smallest Tomato, Most Oddly Formed Tomato, Best Tomato-Based Dessert and Tallest Tomato Vine.

Other activities include a cruise-in car show, inflatables (bounce house), a Queen contest and a Princess contest, bingo, an art show for kids, Hamster Balls and performances by a magician.

New this year and sure to become a favorite is the Spaghetti Eating Contest being held on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Live musical performances will be provided by the groups McGuffey Lane, The Jack and Postal Jammin' Guys and singers Cliff Cody and Brad McCloud.

In addition, the Shriner Clowns will be on hand at the Festival.

There will be plenty of food available for purchase (including fried green tomatoes) and there will be a Beer Garden. The Beer Garden will be open from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. on Friday and noon- 10 p.m. on Saturday.

Hours for the Reynoldsburg Tomato Festival are 4 p.m. - 10 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.
