Reyes and Peterson win PAUSATF Grand Prix at the Big Sur 5k

Quickly becoming the defacto headline of the 2010 PAUSATF Road Racing Grand Prix, Sergio Reyes and Clara Peterson triumphed at the Big Sur 5k yesterday. Both runners have won three of the four races in the Grand Prix series this year. Reyes was second in the Zippy 5k, after a fast track 5000 two days earlier. Peterson skipped the 10-mile in Redding.

One week after her victory at the Zippy 5k, Peterson recorded her second victory in three years at the Big Sur 5k, setting a new woman's course record in the process. In 2008 Peterson won with a time of 17:23. This year she ran 16:49, to win by sixteen seconds. In 2009, Peterson held a newborn son as she watched husband Jeff finish fourth in the men's division.

Reyes, running for the Asics Aggies, won this race for the second time in three years, as well, winning in a time of 14:40. This is the fastest time on the course since it has been part of the PAUSATF Grand Prix series, and is believed to be a new course record. Reyes also won the race in 2005 when it was not a Grand Prix event.

Linda Somers Smith (Aggies), the highest age-graded performer of the day, was second woman behind Peterson, in 17:05. Somers-Smith won the race in 2009, with a time of 17:45. Yiou Wang (Tamalpa) finished third in 17:50.

Reyes was followed in the men's race by Austin Ramos (Transports) in 14:56. Neville Davey was third in 15:26.

Christopher Schille (Aggies) has been involved with the battle for the men's master division victories in the short Grand Prix races over the past couple of years, but was no match today for Chris Knorzer (WVTC). Knorzer won easily in 16:11, with Schille second in 16:40, and Jeff Mann (Strawberry Canyon) third in 16:51.

Somers-Smith easily won the women's master division with her 17:05. Magdalena Visser (Impalas) was second in 18:33 and Lisbet Sunshine (Impalas) took third in 18:41.

Dwight Smith and Tim O'Rourke continue trading victories in the men's senior division, with Smith taking the title in the race that may be considered his home course. Smith's margin of victory was fourteen seconds.

Sarah Tabutt beat Impalas teammate Suzanne Cordes by more than a minute to win the women's senior division in 19:36.

Don Porteous (Tamalpa) beat Boston Marathon finisher, John Yamagata (WVJS) by 22 seconds to win the men's super-senior division in 19:30.

JoAnne Rowland (Impalas) won the women's super-senior division in 23:52.

Hans Schmid ran away with the men's veteran victory in 20:41.

Dina Kovash (Impalas) won the women's veteran division in 43:17, although she was beaten in the race for the age-group victory by a non-PA runner.
