Rey Maualuga re-signs with the Cincinnati Bengals (Photos)

The Bengals re-signed LB Rey Maualuga today. After last season, he became an unrestricted free agent, meaning he could have signed with another club. Instead, he decided to return to Cincinnati for a two-year deal worth $6.5 million.

Maualuga was drafted in the second round of the 2009 draft USC. He has made 61 starts (includes postseason) in his first four seasons.

In 2012, he finished with 122 tackles. As a free agent, he only visited Arizona.

Head Coach Marvin Lewis says Maulaluga is passionate about becoming a great player. The club will also try to re-sign Adam Jones and Terrence Newman, who is also considering an opportunity to play in Oakland.

With former backup Bruce Gradkowski leaving for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Bengals need a veteran to backup QB Andy Dalton. Former Bengals QB Ryan Fitzpatrick visited Cincinnati to speak to Coach Lewis about possibly returning to the Bengals. Fitzpatrick is one of the more talented quarterbacks still on the market.

Other than Maualuga, the Bengals also re-signed the following players:

  • DE Robert Geathers
  • LS Clark Harris
  • DE Wallace Gilberry
  • DE Michael Johnson
  • K Mike Nugent
  • P Kevin Huber
