Rex Hospital Open a tune-up for some U.S. Open qualifiers

Seven golfers expected to be in the field this weekend at the Rex Hospital Open in Raleigh also are scheduled to compete in next week's U.S. Open.

Ty Tryon, Matt Richardson, Bubba Dickerson, Elliot Gealy, Will Wilcox, Jon Mills and Geoffrey Sisk all qualified in sectional tournaments Monday to play in this year's second major, which will be held June 16-19 at the at the Congressional in Maryland. Tryon, Richardson, Dickerson, Gealy, Wilcox, Mills and Sisk also will be competing in the Rex Hospital Open, a Nationwide Tour event held at TPC Wakefield.

Tryon, a Raleigh native and former golf Wunderkind, will be playing in Raleigh under a sponsor's exemption. Tryon turned pro at 16 in 2001 and made the PGA Tour, but he failed to hold onto his tour card the following year. The Rex Hospital Open will be his first Nationwide event in 2011.

Richardson, Dickerson, Gealy, Wilcox, Mills and Sisk all are regular players on the Nationwide Tour, and Dickerson is No. 9 on the money list for the year. Mills is 16th on the list, and Wilcox sits at No. 26. The Top 25 money winners at the end of the Nationwide Tour season earn a PGA Tour card for next year.

Also in the field for the Rex Hospital Open are defending champ John Riegger and 15-yearold Carter Jenkins, who won Sunday's Rex Hospital Open Junior Invitational.

The opening round of the tournament will begin Thursday morning for the 156-man field.
