Reward offered for person that 'banded' their dog's testicles

Monterey County, CA - The Monterey SPCA is actively searching for the person responsible for inflicting injuries to a 1 yr-old dog's testicles.

The dog, since named Bandit, was discovered on Dec. 1 by a woman in the 200 block of Espinosa Road, south of Castroville. The woman noticed the dog running loose and when she approached him, she discovered that he was bleeding.

The dog, a Pointer mix, was taken to the Center Animal Hospital in Castroville - the veterinary hospital contacted the SPCA. The dog was discovered to have a band, common for the castration of farm animals, around his testicles.

Bandit's injuries required that he undergo an immediate neuter surgery. According to the SPCA, had Bandit not been discovered, he would have eventually died.

As it was, Bandit was suffering from painful swelling and bleeding from the band. The SPCA believes that someone was attempting to neuter the dog.

Right now, the SPCA is hopeful that someone will recognize Bandit, and they are offering a $500 reward for verifiable information. Anyone with tips is asked to phone the Monterey SPCA at 831-373-2631 or 831-422-4721 ext. 231. Tips are confidential.

So glad Bandit was found and got the help he needed before it was too late. Hope they find the guy who did this and 'band' his testicles!

This type of thing, like DIY euthanasia, is sadly going to become more and more the case due largely in part from the exorbitant costs of vetting animals. Nobody is monitoring their charges, most make no payment plans, and are making it difficult on owners to perform proper maintenance and other procedures for their pets.

This used to be a common way to neuter sheep. I always thought it was horrible! I thought that practice went out with the buggy whip! I guess the idiot gets half a point for wanting his dog neutered..or NOT!

I like the idea of finding the idiot who did this and doing the same thing to HIS testicles. As far as the cost of spay/neuter, in many areas there are low cost facilities for those who can't afford the excessive prices charged by vets.

I hadn't heard of DIY euthanasia. That makes me even sicker than this story did.

Of course, it could have just as easily been a woman that did this to Bandit. Hopefully, the person will be identified and charged. It is sickening to know that this type of treatment is the norm for farm animals...castration with bands, or with no sedation or pain medicines, hot branding, and era notching...just to name a few. Pathetic....
