One of the cats had been doused in diesel fuel, and the other was slashed from hip to hip across its abdomen. The Humane Society believes they were injured late on Saturday, September 28 or early on Sunday morning, September 29 by the Sunoco gas station near Richardson and Standard Avenues in Crisfield.
Neighbors are upset and angry that someone could be hurting the local cats. According to Jack Mills, director of the Humane Society in Somerset County, "This is the worse case we've heard of anywhere around here."
Mills stated that the cat that had been cut is currently on life support. The cat covered in diesel fuel had to be euthanized. Mills said "It started to suffer. It went blind. It couldn't walk. It was losing its neurological functions and the vet suggested it had suffered enough, and we had to put it down."
The Humane Society of Somerset County is offering a $625 reward for information leading to the person or persons responsible for abusing the cats. The Humane Society reports that those involved may have scratch marks on their arms or hands. Call 410-651-2424 with any information.
Donations are being accepted to help with the surviving cats medical costs. Donations can be made through their website or mailed to the Humane Society of Somerset County, P.O. Box 493, Princess Anne, Md. 21853.
