Revolutions for the new year

Forget about resolutions.

Let's think along the lines of a revolution when it comes to our health and well being for 2014. We all need to make 'sudden, radical changes' at this point in our lives.

Keep it simple. Just three or four simple changes we commit to doing. Be committed to staying with these changes for the first month, then two months and three months after the first of the year. Stay with them until they become a habit, a way of our living each day, week, month and the rest of our lives.

  • Movement
  • Stillness
  • Eating/Drinking

Change the way you think. Think with gratitude daily, morning and evening time. What are you grateful for having in your life? Family, spouse, friends, grandchildren? Your health, a job. Financial security that you're building or starting? It is never too late to change your thinking.

Focus on what you do want in your experience, and not on what you don't. What we tend to think about most often, often manifests itself in our experience. It's the rule.

Change your attitude, change your life.

Get up off the couch and take a walk. Or, get to the gym three or four times during the week. Do it regularly. Just 30 to 40 minutes each time you walk or workout at the gym. If you want to change your routine for variety, use some free weights for keeping muscles toned and strong.

Do some yoga for resiliency. Or Tai Chi for balance.

Our bodies are movement oriented. We need to keep the machinery well oiled and maintained.

Keep moving, or risk rusting from inertia.

Be still a couple of times during the day. Meditation can be done for just 5 to 10 minutes each day. This creates balance in your life and reduces stress. It releases beneficial chemicals naturally into your body's metabolism.

Sit quietly, breathe in deeply and just follow your breath in and out. Slow, even breaths and do not struggle with clearing your mind of any thoughts. Rather, just focus on each breath, in a relaxed frame of mind, a grateful state of mind.

There is power in the stillness.

Go more green vegetables when you eat. Drink more water during the day. Green, leafy vegetables are the best, and alkaline water to counter the acidity in our bodies will work wonders. Consume more fruits and nuts between meals. Eat smaller portions, but eat something every three to four hours. Don't eat anything substantial after 8 p.m.

Eat less red meat and pork. Some fish and chicken is best along with more green vegetables and some fruit. Stop your sugar consumption along with any high fructose corn syrup found in too many processed foods. Read the labels.

There you go.
