Today, the New England Revolution traded the rights of U.S. Men's National Team defender Michael Parkhurst to the Columbus Crew in exchange for the fourth overall pick in Thursday’s 2014 MLS SuperDraft and allocation money.

Parkhurst, a member of the Revolution from 2005 through 2008, was 2005 MLS Rookie of the Year and 2007 MLS Defender of the Year before joining Danish Superliga club Nordsjælland in December 2008. A year ago, he moved to German Bundesliga side FC Augsburg. Parkhurst, 29, has earned 23 caps with the U.S. National Team.

“This deal provides us with a significant amount of flexibility, both for our salary cap and our roster, and allows us to make additional moves to continue improving our roster," said Revolution general manager Michael Burns said.

With the fourth overall selection, the Revolution now holds three first-round picks in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft – No. 4, No. 12 and No. 19 – as well as one second-round pick and one third-round pick.

Recently, several U.S. internationals have returned to MLS to be more available to train with USMNT in hopes of securing a spot on the World Cup roster.

Charlie Davies

The Revolution also signed forward Charlie Davies on a free transfer from Denmark’s Randers FC. Davies spent the second half of the 2013 season on loan to the Revs and his contract with Randers was dissolved by mutual consent.

Davies, 27, made four disappointing appearances as a substitute in New England in 2013.

Once a bright prospect signed by Swedish club Hammarby in 2006, Davies was seriously injured in a fatal car accident after a night of partying and has since bounced between disgruntled clubs.

But Davies scored 11 goals in 26 appearances for D.C. United in 2011 while on loan, then returned to Sochaux and then to Randers FC last summer. Davies has scored four goals and added two assists in 17 caps for the USMNT.

Donnie Smith

The Revolution also re-signed midfielder Donnie Smith, 23, although he only made one appearance in 2013.

The Revolution drafted Smith with the 21st overall pick of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. Smith was a 2012 NSCAA Scholar All-America at UNC-Charlotte, and scored four goals and added four assists in 19 appearances (16 starts) in his 2012 senior season.
