Revolution stand 1-1-0 at Desert Diamond Cup

On Feb. 16, the New England Revolution defeated the New York Red Bulls 3-1 to win their first game at the MLS preseason Desert Diamond Cup tournament at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.

The Revolution now stand at 1-1-0 in that tournament and will reach the Championship match with a win over Real Salt Lake on Wed., Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. ET. A draw could put the Revs through to the final if the Red Bulls don’t defeat the Sounders by three or more goals. The championship will be televised next Saturday on NBC Sports Network.

In the first Cup game on Feb. 13, the Seattle Sounders shut out the Revolution 2-0 with goals from Brad Evans and Eddie Johnson, assisted by Mauro Rosales.

Revs come from behind with three second-half goals

The Revs were without suspended Sainey Nyassi and Kevin Alston, new signing Chad Barrett, Ryan Guy, Saer Sene and Chris Tierney were unavailable because of either illness or injury.

Juninho, traded from the LA Galaxy in the offseason, put the Red Bulls ahead in the 11th minute with an unassisted goal from 25 yards out.

Nguyen brought New England level with a penalty in the 52nd minute that slipped by New York goalkeeper Luis Robles. Six minutes later, Honduran national Jerry Bengtson scored the Revolution’s first goal from the run of play in the 2013 preseason to put New England up 2-1 with a header.
