Revolution Books has been a literary icon in NYC for the past 32 years. They house some of the most prolific literature in print today. They have been the learning portal for so many wondering hopefuls who crave for literature that tell the true accounts of sexism, racism, injustices of all sorts, homophobia, imperialism and the abuses of capitalism.
Revolution Books is a Not-for-Profit organization dedicated to informing and educating the masses of the thousands of individuals who stood up and fought for what they believed in. They don’t sell books on planning Jihad’s, cross burnings or how to assassinate the president, yet they do stock shelves and more shelves of radical writers who vividly describe rebellions, revolts and revolution!
Revolution Books are manned by volunteer dedicated staff members who believe in educating minds with valuable information that can uplift and uprise. They are a fearless literary beacon that hosts some of the most radical group discussions including a series of panels discussing the current policies and politics of Egypt.
They host book signings and special programming featuring writers such as: MELVIN VAN PEEBLES “CONFESSIONS OF AN EX-DOOFUS-ITCHYFOOTED MUTHA”,“ABORTION, MORALITY AND THE LIBERATION OF WOMEN”, a presentation in the wake of the murder of Dr. George Tiller. Dr. Susan Wicklund and Sunsara Taylor, GLBT Community Center.
“THE AGE OF OBAMA, PART 2: POLICE TERROR, NO JOBS, INCARCERATION, MIS-EDUCATION: WHAT FUTURE FOR OUR YOUTH?” a dialogue between CORNEL WEST AND CARL DIX, and most recently, ‘An Evening with 2008 Pulitzer prize winning author Junot Diaz’.
Mr. Diaz captivated his audience with excerpts from his collection of short stories, past and present. He discussed his novels, the critically acclaimed ‘Drown’ and Pulitzer Prize winner, ‘The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao’. The night was rounded out with intelligent humor and memories of his past youth.
Revolution Books is one of the driving forces in providing much needed literature that doesn’t have much of a voice in the more mainstream bookstores, such as Barnes & Noble, Borders and Strand.
They support our questions with an unending source of answers provided by thousands of writers, documentaries, informative panels and memorabilia from the eras that helped shape today’s world.
Their mission statement reads: They’re "Alive with a defiant spirit that refuses to accept that the horrors of today's world have to be.” Judging from their public’s feedback they are, “A bookstore that’s part of a movement”.
In this journalist’s opinion Revolution Books is more than a bookstore; it is a meeting place for those who seek the true accounts of history, past and present.
In spite of today's technology, It sure feels good to know places like Revolution Books
still exist in this age of the Internet, Kindles and audio books.
