Wednesday evening, the New England Revolution defeated the USL PRO Richmond Kickers 3-2 in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at City Stadium in Richmond, Virginia. The Revolution now advance to the fifth round of Open Cup and will host the USL PRO Rochester Rhinos next Wednesday, June 25, at Brown University’s Stevenson Field in Providence. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Richmond Kickers, now out of the tournament, currently hold the second spot in the 14-team USL PRO table.
All U.S.-based MLS teams enter the Open Cup in the fourth round, but this is the seventh time in club history the Revs have won their opening match and advanced to the next round.
Stephen McCarthy started the scoring in the eighth minute with a header, his first goal since July 20, 2011, off a corner kick by rookie Steve Neuman. Richmond equalized in the 24th minute with a combination from Jason Yeisley and George Davis IV, whose side volley from 10 yards out got behind goalkeeper Brad Knighton.
Rookies Patrick Mullins and Neumann combined in the 35th minute to provide Neumann his first professional goal in his first professional start and bring the score to 2-1. Four minutes later,
Knighton's goal kick connected with Mullins, who tallied his fifth professional goal this season, to bring the score to 3-1. Matthew Delicate, assisted by Davis, kept the game alive for the Kickers with a glancing header in the 73rd minute for the final score of 3-2.
Both Neumann’s goal and assist were his first-ever professional goalscoring contributions.
Revolution head coach Jay Heaps started Brad Knighton, behind regulars Chris Tierney, Jose Goncalves, Stephen McCarthy and Darrius Barnes. Donnie Smith started at left midfield and Diego Fagundez on the right, while Neumann started with Lee Nguyen and Scott Caldwell in the central midfield with Mullins on top.
Tickets for the Revolution's next Open Cup match versus the Rochester Rhinos start at $15 – both general admission and supporters general admission. Tickets are now on sale at revolutionsoccer.net now and parking at Brown is free.
