Dodger utility man Jerry Hairston has confidence he can do anything – even perform like Michael Jackson.
An in-game feature on the stadium big screen asked Dodger players to finish the sentence, “When I dance, I look like…”
“Michael Jackson,” answered Hairston without hesitation.
To prove the point, the 16-year veteran of the Major Leagues did a moon walk that would make fans of the King of Pop proud.
Never one to doubt his own abilities, Hairston continued his audition, belting out Jackson’s chart-topping hit Billie Jean.
Unlike Jackson, Hairston’s crooning was less than thrilling.
“I’d like to comment on that,” said a joking Hairston. “My voice was hoarse that day. I had a cold. I couldn’t give it my all.”
Feigning upset, Hairston continued.
“They promised me they had an edit button,” he said. “They said they’d clean it up, but obviously they didn't.”
Dodger manager Don Mattingly wasn’t surprised when apprised of his player’s overflowing self-confidence.
“I believe Jerry thinks he can do anything,” Mattingly said, laughing.
Hairston may have his manager’s support about his dance floor prowess, but his off-key vocal performance was unmistakable.
Despite the evidence, Hairston maintains the poor showing was a fluke and wants a chance at redemption.
“I would like to give myself a chance without the cold, with my voice fully healthy.”
So what about the Dodger skipper? How are his skills?
“If I danced, it wouldn’t be that good,” admitted Mattingly.
After thinking about it, the manager reconsidered.
“I take that back,” he said. “If I get the right music, I can put it together.”
Those who have seen Mattingly on the dance floor believe Hairston’s over-confidence just might be rubbing off.
