Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello will be rocking New York Comic Con to debut his new comic book, “Orchid” from Dark Horse Comics. Not only will he be doing a signing, he will also play a free show for VIP ticket holders on Thursday night at 7:30. So did Tom Morello bring to comics the same innovation he brought to music? Well, it’s a work in progress.
The first issue of “Orchid” introduces us to a dystopian future/fantasy world similar to Ralph Bakshi’s “Wizards.” In the future pollution has caused the world to flood creating monstrous mutations that have driven mankind to an area called The Wild, where the rich live above and the poor below. Welcome to the world of a teenage prostitute named Orchid, who may or not be the savior of the world. One can definitely see Morello’s political views creeping into the story. Just look the names of the heroes and the world’s set up.
From what I’ve read so far, “Orchid” has a fascinating world but it's story is something we’ve seen before. Hopefully this will change as the story and lead character develop. Scott Hepburn’s artwork though is pretty and is definitely a selling point. As of right now Tom Morello’s comic book debut treads familiar ground but ultimately has room to grow.
“Orchid” goes on sale October 12th at comic stores everywhere. Tom Morello will be appearing at Dark Horse Comics’ “Dark Horse Presents: 25 Years of Publishing and Beyond” on Friday the 14th at 1:30 as part of New York Comic Con. Tickets are still available here.
