Review: Rolling Stones concert film shows group and music have aged well

“The Rolling Stones: Sweet Summer Sun: Return to Hyde Park,” which premieres at 9 p.m. Dec. 20 on Showtime, could have been a play-by-the-numbers cut-and-dried concert film with little enthusiasm by a bunch of aging rockers, but anyone catching the show on cable Friday or buying the DVD will find the Stones are still a fine-tuned, well-oiled and hard rockin' machine that can deftly challenge their younger competitors.

Mick Jagger is all over the stage and has become an ageless wonder. Keith Richards, who just turned 70 this week, still is the ultimate rock 'n' roller who has lived hard and still rocks harder. Charlie Watts, as always, keeps a steady beat on the drums. And Ron Wood is playing like he did in his younger days.

The result is a great show, topped with a guest appearance by Mick Taylor, whose first day with the Stones on stage was at the same Hyde Park venue back in 1969.

The lesson learned is some things never change, including the rock 'n' roll rhythm of the Rolling Stones, even 50 years later.
