Roberta Flack's preview of her forthcoming album of Beatles songs, a version of "We Can Work It Out" that became available Tuesday exclusively on iTunes, shows the singer applying the soulful musical accent she's always been known for to a Beatle song.
The song combines Flack's vocals with different sets of background singers and some light touches by session musicians.
Flack's always had a powerful voice, but here maintains a lighter vocal, which keeps the instruments from being pushed deep into the background. The result is a unique version of a song that doesn't often get covered by other artists.
It'll be interesting to see what else she has in store when the full album comes out in February.
