Review of The Flight of Orville Wright Caterpillar by Donna Perugini

"The Flight of Orville Wright Caterpillar" by Donna Perugini presents the gospel message of believing, trust, and salvation in a delightful manner even the youngest of children will enjoy and understand. Coupled with the simple but colorful illustrations by Nancy Titolo "The Flight of Orville Wright Caterpillar" is an touching book for children and adults.

Like many of us Orville has a dream to do something that other, even his friends, tell him he will never be able to do. Orville Caterpillar wants to fly. No matter what he can't get flying out of his head and even prepares for the day he will fly by reading books on flying and getting special flying gear to help him. But he is still not able to fly.

Then one day Orville meets a stranger, a little girl, who shares the message with him, "God has put a dream in your heart to be what he has planned for you to be." That was just what the little caterpillar needed. Trusting and believing the message he continues to dream of flying until the time a voice tells him, "Orville, climb up that tree and spin a bag around yourself." Orville was a little confused but trusted the voice and did what he was told.

Of course we adults can figure out where the story goes from there but children will delight at going on the journey with the caterpillar and being part of his first flight.

At the end of "The Flight of Orville Wright Caterpillar" you will find a page where children can not only document the date they accepted Jesus as Lord but can also include names of other people they have shared the message with.

The Lansing City Guide Examiner, Faith Draper, received a copy of "The Flight of Orville Wright Caterpillar" for review and shared it with two of her grandchildren. What better review than from the audience the book is intended for? This is what they had to say:

Andrew (age 8) - "My favorite part is where Orville sneeks into the tent but I knew he was gonna be able to fly. It's a good book and other kids should read it too."

Colleen (age 5) - "I want to you (grandma) to read this book to all my friends, my favorite part is when the caterpillar turns into a butterfly and he gets to fly."

Grandma - Andrew lost most interest in the book the first page or two but the 'mystery' of Orville being able to fly was lost because he knew right off the catterpillar was going to turn into a butterfly. Colleen on the other hand was enthralled with the book and hung on every word. When asked what was her favorite picture she proceeded to go through the book picking on nearly every picture as her favorite. I loved sharing this book with my grandchildren and look forward to sharing it and the wonderful message it delievers with many other children in the future. If you are looking for a wonderful children's book with a strong Christian theme then I highly recommend "The Flight of Orville Wright Caterpillar".

Great job, Fatih. You covered all the bases with the book trailer, links, 3 other books and an interview with your grandchildren!

Thanks for posting it at the other places also. I appreciated the candor of your grandson. Your granddaughter should hear the songs written for the book. If I haven't sent them to you, by all means email me for them. Don't forget to download those coloring pages for her.
