Well another year had passed but wish I could say it was a great year for sci-fi / fantasy films. First we saw the “Mortal Instruments : City of Bones,” which felt like a knock off of Twilight, slightly better but not much. "Jack the Giant Slayer" was a little better with more of a backstory on the Giants. "OZ the Great and Powerful" was a more decent story with a promise of more to come. “Iron Man 3" was the block buster for the summer staring Robert Downey Jr. Continuing the story from the Avengers. This movie was a lot better than Iron Man 2 with a more different villain. “Pacific Rim” was supposed to be a summer block buster too but sadly the character development wasn’t there. Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) cried and pouted through out the whole thing. And when she could have redeemed herself she didn’t. Then there was “Riddick” staring Vin Diesel to reprise in the Chronicles of Riddick series. It could have had more depth to the film. Pitch Black is still the best.“Thor: The Dark World” was by far the best this year. Instead of a super hero movie it felt more like a fantasy film with crossover of ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Star Wars’ "Enders Game" was good but it could have been a little longer. “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.” A much more worthy film of Peter Jackson than the first movie.
However, there is a couple I didn’t mention that belong in this category that I missed. "R.I.P.D," "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters," "Beautiful creatures," and "Upside Down", which is more of a Romeo and Juliet feel to it.
Out of these films I can only point out four that I really loved. Maybe it was hoping too much for something like the Avengers, which we won’t see for another year but maybe 2014 sci-fi / fantasy films will be a little more worth wild.
