Finding children’s books showing the love of a mother for her child is rather common but in “Guess How Much I Love You” by Sam McBratney we find a father showing his love for his son.
Little Nutbrown Hare is attempting to delay going to sleep and comes up with a little game of ‘guess how much I love you’ such as "I love you as high as I can hop!". His father Big Nutbrown Hare tops each of his son’s declarations with another ending with "I love you right up to the moon."
The soft pastel illustrations by Anita Jeram are very reminiscent of the classic Beatrix Potter books (a favorite series of myself & my oldest son now in his mid thirties) and make “Guess How Much I Love You” a nice relaxing book for bed or nap time.
Reading “Guess How Much I Love You” at the store brought me to tears. Two of my grandchildren and I have a similar game we play, “I love you more…” I love you more than all the flowers in the world is responded to with I love you more than all the grains of sand in the world, I love you more than all the stars in the sky, I love you more than the whole universe is usually the end to the game.
Children need to be told and shown they are loved regularly and making a game of it and letting them also share their love feelings.
You can find “Guess How Much I Love You” at the Dansville, Holt, Lansing, Aurelius, Dansville and Foster branches of the Capital Area District Library and Barnes & Noble Books. Oh my goodness, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book. I've been reading it to my daughter since she was an infant. It's lots of fun now b/c she'll do the actions (for the reaching) and we whisper the last line to each other. Yep, I love this book!
