Review; Natalie Goldberg's Old Friend from Far Away

Everyone has a story they need to tell, it's called life, but for many the hard part is where to begin the story There are so many memories stirring around inside but how to get them from the mind to the page. Don't fret Natalie Goldberg has a great resource to help to bring life to the page.

Natalie Goldberg who is well known for her book "Writing Down the Bones" has crafted a new book designed to help the novice as well as the seasoned writer put their life down on paper (or Word document).

There are many good books on the market for jotting down memoirs and life experiences but one of the best books is Natalie Goldberg's, "Old Friend from Far Away," a handbook for crafting memoir.

Goldberg starts the book by saying, "Writing is an athletic takes a lot of practice. Behind the football player we see on TV, the players have put in hundreds of hours before the big game."

She goes on to say to get better,"Begin to work those muscles. Just like you'd go to the least.three or four times a week, pickup the pen and do these ten-minute exercises." She is referring to the exercises in the book.

To get the creative juices flowing Goldberg does not fill her pages with chapter after chapter of how to's instead she has exercises which are designed to reach deep down into the subconscious and bring out long forgotten memories.

Some of the exercises sound silly like, "Tell Me", which asks the writer to in ten minutes write down everything they know about jello.

Other exercises get the writer to reach deep inside. One of these exercises, "Mind" asks the writer to jot down on paper for ten minutes about something they have "carried around and gnawed over."

The whole idea of the book is get you doing what you need to do be doing, writing. Then once the writing process becomes familiar it helps you then put down to paper those thought and stories which have filled your lifetime. This book is highly recommended for everyone from the novice to the professional.
