Beijing, China - When I think about Peking duck, I think about Huang Ting restaurant at the Peninsula Hotel in Beijing’s Wangfujing district. There are some that would argue Quanjude, but that’s just a chain restaurant – the McDonalds of duck, if you will; Huang Ting is where we’d go on really special occasions.
Old world charm meets delicate Cantonese cuisine, yet their best kept secret at this Cantonese restaurant housed in the basement of one of Beijing’s finest hotels is the Peking duck. Get a tea recommendation to go with the dim sum spread and allow greed to take over to freely order from the interesting selection on the menu, starting with the perfectly executed duck to sweet and sour pork with pineapple. The asparagus with pumpkin is heavenly.
From the decor to the music, Huang Ting has the style and warmth that makes it perfect for an evening with friends or just the two of you. The staff is as warm as the ambience. It would be hard to find a more beautiful dining room that would impress visitors with a true “China” dining experience (for that matter, the sinks in the restrooms are worth a visit alone).
Huang Ting is a special meal and although expensive, it’s a special occasion place that offers an experience that’s worth the price. It is certainly one of the top Chinese restaurants that Beijing has to offer.
