Bob Young, member of the Poetry Society of Virginia and author of If Not Now, When, reveals that when he “retired, he had money put aside and when the financial crunch hit, he worried if it would be more advantageous to die quickly so that he wouldn’t run out of the funds as they were shrinking”. So Young then began to share a humorous, short lullaby about the financial market… “rock a bye assets… the market will rock… down will come sellers, buyers and all”.
“Ten pages into my preview of this beautiful collection of poems… thank God, Bob has reached that age where wise men stop to ask themselves, ‘If Not Now, When?’” – Nathan M Richardson’s Review of If Not, Now, When.
Phyllis Johnson, freelance writer at The Daily Press and The Virginia Pilot and multi-published author, shared pieces from her books inkBLOT and Being Frank With Anne.
inkBLOT was inspired by those ink blot tests which most of us are familiar with, which got Johnson thinking, “What if somebody used this information against somebody somehow? “. Check out an excerpt from inkBLOT, it’s sure to peak your interest to buy your copy today!
“These ink blot images began to take a life of their own and I could see crimes revolving around these images and imagining how somebody would carry those crimes out.”
– Phyllis Johnson’s inspiration behind inkBLOT
“As a freelance writer, here’s a writer who seldom experiences writer’s block… right?”
– Nathan M Richardson
Pete Freas aka Mindworm, editor of Skipping Stones and member of the Chesapeake Bay Poets, enthusiastically jumped in to share a bit of advice when it comes to writer’s block. When all else fails, “give the inanimate a voice and don’t be afraid to write what your mind is thinking!”, just before he shared his poems of the evening: False Spring, Making Pictures, and Coulda Shoulda Rain.
Edith Blake, who’s been published in Skipping Stones, shared her poems Spring Rain, Storm, and an untitled piece, chosen because of the rainy weather experienced that January morning.
Your Chesapeake Poetry Examiner, Easter Dodds, shared two of her poems, Reach For The Light and Profitable Poetry, which you can download for free, published here in Poet Speak’s 8th Issue: New Year's Edition on pages four to five.
Reach For the Light explores how in the darkest tunnels we may have to travel in life, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel and we must learn to push through our darkest plights and reach for that light! Profitable Poetry makes you think about what it is you are passionate about and are you just striving to make it to the next day working towards what it is you aren’t passionate about or is there a way to sustain the life you live “where the value of life living meets the value of passion lived”?
“There is no money in poetry and there is also no poetry in money” – Nathan M Richardson's quote in response to Profitable Poetry.
