Review: 'Dogging Truth' by Kevin Hughes

Kevin Hughes’ most recent crime thriller, ‘Dogging Truth’ has the creativity and suspense that could have a place alongside best-selling author, John Grisham. The twisting, turning plot will leave the reader wanting more and keeps you at the edge of your seat through to the end.

The story, set in Madison, WI, follows ex-cop Toby Jenkins (TJ) into a defense case that he doesn’t want to be in. Convinced by his ex-wife, Elizabeth, a defense lawyer and partner at the prominent law firm, Mavis, Kramer and Drummond, TJ compromises his police ethics. TJ’s attitude and belief in justice is to prosecute the “bad guy” and to switch sides and help the defense is unthinkable; until he is reminded by his soon to be adopted son that they owed Elizabeth one for her help in the adoption case.

TJ helps the defense but wonders, at what cost? His conscious gets the best of him throughout the investigation to which he threatens to quit several times. Having to accept the conflict with his morals and defending a suspect that he doesn’t like, TJ questions his every move.

Hughes convincingly leads the reader one way and then the next until you are enthralled into the pages of his novel. Once you pick it up you will want to keep reading to find out the newest angle TJ is working on. Being a Dane County Sheriff’s Office detective in Madison, WI himself, Kevin Hughes shows that he knows how the criminal justice system works and how a cop operates. This novel proves that he has insight beyond the scope of a civilian’s imagination. This novel is for the reader that wants to get inside a police investigator’s head when he is lead astray to the “Dark Side” of the law.
