Caught a wonderful production at a local community theater last night -- proving that quality entertainment doesn't have to come with an exorbitant price tag.  The production is A ... My Name Will Always Be Alice, playing at the Delray Beach Playhouse though Feb. 14, 2010.  Don't miss it!

This all-woman revue is sort of a musical version of the feminist play The Vagina Monologues -- except, it's actually been around a lot longer.  A ... My Name Will Always Be Alice debuted in New York in 1983, and proceeded to win an Obie Award and tons of kudos for its wonderful take on the state of modern womanhood.

Rave reviews and positive word of mouth are spreading about this production, with some people reportedly seeing it several times (which is quite remarkable for community theater!).  The six stars -- Helen Buttery, Marla D. Gideos, Cindy Goldberg, Debbie Goldberg, Kaitrin Lynch and Lauren Paley -- all have wonderful voices, harmonizing beautifully together while also shining on their own.

The revue's skits and musical numbers use humor, pathos and drama in equal measure to capture the female experience from teenagerdom through marriage, family life, and growing older.  The original production produced sequels with some songs added or updated with contemporary references; but many of the themes still resonate just as strongly, nearly 30 years later. Standout numbers include  Pretty Young Men, Painted Ladies, Wheels, and Lifelines.

Tickets at the 238-seat Delray Beach Playhouse are $25 ($12 students).  Next up will be Neil Simon's The Prisoner of Second Avenue, with There Goes the Bride closing out the theater's season.
