Reversing signs of autism: a college student's story

“Whatever the mind of man can conceive, it can achieve.” W. Clement Stone

Sharon E. Lane has three boxes containing medical documents and school records to verify Andrew’s former life. YES! Andrew Lane had autism.

Mrs. Lane revealed that Andrew was not given any documented accommodations while attending elementary school. It was more of an informal IEP. He had been brought up to the child study team. At that time, he did not qualify for special education, because he was not failing academically.

While in middle school, he was given a 504 Plan and upon entering high school, he received an individual educational plan.

The interview begins…

I would like to say ‘thanks’ for meeting with me during your spring break from college.
Andrew, tell me something about you remember about your childhood?

My childhood was dreadful. I disliked most of my teachers because they disrespected anyone that was different.

So, if you did not fit the mold, you were treated differently?

Yes, that’s right!

When did you know you were special?

I would say in the second grade during gym class. I realized I could not skip, but I wanted to. I did not know why I couldn’t.

How was middle school? I understand you had special accommodations along with adaptive P.E. Did these accommodations help you?

A little…but I was treated differently. I was treated like I was mentally-disabled.

In high school, you received more accommodations. How did you feel about that?

I felt high school was so…so… It was better than middle school and elementary school.

When you graduated from high school, you were accepted into a private college? How did you feel about college life and having to request for your auxiliary aids and academic accommodations?

College life at that time was very disturbing and something I would rather forget.

So, you dropped out of college. I understand you started taking spirulina. When did you begin to notice a difference?

I noticed a difference about two months later. My mind was more clear. I was able to concentrate better. My motor skills had improved.

When did you decide you wanted to go back to college?

About a semester after I dropped out and had been taking spirulina.

I understand you refused accommodations and any other form of assistance. What made you decide to do this?

Because…you are generally treated as having a mental disorder, even if it may only be a physical one. However, I felt I did not need any assistance. I could do well on my own.

Yes! That’s obvious! You’re making all As as a full-time student. What are your future plans?

My future plans are to graduate from college and become a teacher.

Any advice you have for others?

Yes, take spirulina…it will make your life better

Additional Facts about Spirulina:

Several years ago, the National Cancer Institute announced sulfolpids from blue-green algae like spirulina were remarkably active in test tube experiments against the AIDS virus.

In 1993-95, research showed natural polysaccharides in spirulina increased T-cell counts, strengthened the immune system and raised disease resistance in chickens, fish and mice. The animal feed industry is embracing spirulina as a new probiotic to replace overused antiobiotic drugs in animal feeds. In 1994, a Russian patent was awarded for spirulina as a medicine for reducing allergic reactions from radiation in the Children of Chemobyl, the rare essential fatty acid GLA, sulfolipids, glycolipids and polysaccharides.

Its deep green color comes from its rainbow of natural pigments-chlorophyll (green), phycocyanin (blue) and carotenoids (orange) –that harvest the sun’s energy. Easy-to-digest so nutrients are absorbed quickly.

Tests done by NASA found spirulina to be an excellent, compact space food for astronauts (1 kg. of Spirulina is equivalent to 1000 kgs. of assorted vegetables).

International health organizations have hailed Spirulina as one of the "Greatest Superfoods on Earth".
