Reverent Hunter is one of two cards spoiled today Aug. 30, 2013 during PAX Prime from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming expert "Magic: The Gathering" expansion set "Theros" (The other is Gift of Immortality). This rare green creature makes a powerful use out of one of the set's newest mechanics devotion.
Reverent Hunter -2G
Creature - Human Archer (Rare)
When Reverent Hunter enters the battlefield, put a number of +1/+1 counters on it equal to your devotion to green. (Each G in the mana costs of permanents you control counts toward your devotion to green.).
In a perfect draw, it's possible for Reverent Hunter to enter the battlefield with five +1/+1 counters on it the third turn, making it a 6/6 creature. You'll need a first turn Elvish Visionary and a combination of creatures that have three green in their mana costs on your second turn. While Predator Ooze may not be in Standard this fall, we may receive a cycle of mono-colored creatures in the "Theros" block to help out devotion decks.
At its worst, Reverent Hunter is a 2/2 for 2G. A green Gray Ogre. You'll need a heavy commitment to green to make Reverent Hunter more powerful than multicolored cards like Loxodon Smiter. In the right deck, a late game Reverent Hunter can be a massive threat. With a Crowned Ceratok on the battlefield you'll be able to trample your way to victory.
How will you use Reverent Hunter?
