Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band plays foot stomping zydeco, down home, country tunes like nobody's business! If you want a taste of something different, fun, and jamming, you need to check these cats out. This family band is heating up the nation with Warped Tour, then out on their own.
Rev Payton and his wife Breezy stopped in to chat about their unique and foot stomping performance at this years Warped Tour 2010.
Is this your first Warped Tour?
Rev Payton: We did 2 and ½ weeks of it last year, so they liked us so much, they asked us back.
You have such a unique sound and had the crowd thumping out there. You played really well…
Rev Payton: Well thank you! We stick out like a sore thumb out there and that’s what we love. We feel like we’re lucky to be out here.
Who are your musical influences?
Rev Payton: I love old stuff like Charlie Patton, Furry Lewis, Bucky White, John Hurt, and I also love great songwriters like CCR, to the Stones, to John Prine, and the Who, who just put on great shows.
You definitely put on a great show! I love your washboard?
Breezy: Thank you.
How long have you been together as a band?
Rev Payton: (to Breezy) How long we been a band?
Breezy: 5 years
Rev Payton: Full Time for 4 years, but I’m 29 and I’ve been playing in bands since I’ve been 12 yrs old.
Breezy: It’s a family band-
Rev Payton: We were playin for along time together before we took it out on the road.
Are there any bands you would like to see perform at Warped?
Rev Payton: We have all summer to see ‘em, but yeah, I wanna see The Casualties again, The Bouncing Souls, Big Problems-
Breezy: Andrew W K
Rev Payton: Andrew W K for sure!
Do you have any suggestions to other Indie Artists how to get their music out there?
Rev Payton: To get your music out there, you gotta tour. That’s the number one thing.
Breezy: You’re not gonna sell CDs unless you go out and tour. I mean, you might be one of those MySpace bands, but those chances are very low-
Rev Payton: You’d be very lucky
Breezy: If you’re not willing to get a band, go play shows, and be out on the road, this isn’t the world for you. We play 250 shows a year, we’re always on the road, and that’s where our success lies. Wearing people out one person at a time.
Any new CDs coming out?
Rev Payton: We have a new record coming out, it’s called “The Wages” and it’s by far the best thing we’ve done so far. The reviews are saying so, and so are we, and I know people say that, and I wanna be better tomorrow than I am today. That’s what this is, it’s better than our last one because we’re better than we were with our last one.
Coming back through LA soon besides Warped in Pomona Aug 11th?
Rev Payton: Yes, The Mint Oct 8th
Breezy: We’re also doing the Joshua Tree Festival in October too
Rev Payton: Yes then too.
Can’t wait to catch up with you again soon then!
