(Oct. 18, 2013 - Oakland, CA) Get your Aquanet and spandex out for a hair raising, feathers flying, glittery evening of Bad Glamour Shots and '80s hits and the best dance music of today benefiting Our Space, a program of BAYC, a Division of Sunny Hills Services on Oct. 19.
"This event is going to be so much fun and will help get the word out to the larger community about the work we are doing at Our Space," said Stephanie Perron, ACSW, program director of Our Space, a queer and trans youth center based in Hayward.
It's going to be a night filled with "a great time with great photos, great music and fabulous community," added Christine De La Rosa, co-producer of fiveTEN Oakland Events, which is helping Our Space produce the event.
The two women anticipate that up to 400 queer and ally guests supporting LGBTQ youth will come out for a night of dancing and bad glamour shots, said Perron.
DJs Val G, Trinity, Motive and Becky Knox will take the crowd back to the '80s and today's dance hits on two floors while photographers will take the best soft focus, bad glam shots of guests starting 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the New Parish (the event is for 21+).
"We are thrilled to be part of this event," said De La Rosa about the promoter's strong support of LGBTQ youth. "This fundraiser is a membership drive to get LGBTQ people of all ages to consider what impact they could have if they donated just $10 a month to an organization whose mission is to empower and engage with youth that are going to be transitioning from their youth communities to our adult communities."
Monies raised from this event will fund up to four internship positions at Our Space's youth leadership program. LGBTQ youth will undergo a leadership development training program rooted in principles of social justice. The youth will utilize skills learned in the training program and work in pairs to co-facilitate peer support groups - particularly for LGBTQ youth of color, foster youth, and youth in the juvenile justice system - at Our Space.
"Our youth are fierce and fabulous change-agents in our community, but often their leadership skills are undervalued or ignored. They often struggle to find employment, so having a position as a youth intern at Our Space will provide them with experience they can use on a resume and help them develop job-related skills," said Perron.
"I feel incredibly excited about this event," adds Perron. "Our Space has been so blessed this year to build relationships with HYPE and fiveTEN Oakland Events. Their commitment to building the leadership and power of queer and trans young people has been invaluable."
The event is being produced with an inaugural $5,000 grant awarded by Horizon's Young Professionals for Equality, to engage LGBTQ people ages 35 and under to become donors of Our Space. HYPE awarded two other inaugural $5,000 grants supporting Bay Area LGBT organizations to develop and/or expand strategies to engage young donors to the Gay Straight Alliance Network and the Pacific Center.
