Return to Sin City with Lucky in Love

Sin City continues as the setting for Deborah Coonts’ Lucky series with today’s release of her novella titled, Lucky in Love. This time, Coonts asks the question, is love just a random walk or is it really possible to be lucky in love?  It’s Vegas, love, laughter, and some unexpected answers.

For those who haven’t read the previous Lucky novels, Lucky O’Toole is the Head of Customer Relations for the Las Vegas Babylon Casino Hotel. It’s a job that’s riddled with eccentric guests and hilarious situations. Coonts said that in Lucky in Love, “Lucky finds herself seeking the answers when her hotel hosts a reality television show called the Forever Game.  As four couples compete for a Las Vegas wedding extravaganza and her own love life hits a snag, Lucky discovers that the rocky road to love often takes unexpected turns. And that’s not always a bad thing.”

Coonts loves writing about Las Vegas because of how the town affects people. She said, “Vegas is an interesting backdrop that seems to magnify human frailties and foibles, in an often humorous way.”

She’s also saddened by the polarization in our society and fears that it’s growing worse. “I just hate the divisiveness.  My grandmother always taught me to look for the things that I can like in each person I meet.  Now, while we all know that isn't possible all of the time, I'd say it is the vast majority of the time.  Besides, it's a very good attitude and approach to have--in my opinion.”

That acceptance is what Coonts likes about her protagonist. “We are all humans and we all have to find a way to co-exist.  Appreciating our shared humanity is a good start. Learning to accept, if not appreciate, our differences is the next step. That's sorta what Lucky does in her weird way. She embraces humankind. And she tries to find something redeeming in everyone she meets.”

Writers frequently project themselves onto their protagonists and Coonts is no different. Lucky has her openness and sense of humor, but according to Coonts, “Lucky is taller, prettier, has better luck with men and the job I always wanted. But, in her heart, Lucky is very open, very non-judgmental.  I want to be her when I grow up...in every way.”
