Return to Ravnica 'Selesnya Surge' intro pack deck list and review

Selesnya Surge intro pack
Wizards of the Coast

"Selesnya Surge" is one of five new "Return to Ravnica" intro packs. Like the "M13" intro packs ("Mob Rule," "Sole Domination," "Depths of Power," "Path to Victory," and "Wild Rush"), each of the new "Return to Ravnica" intro packs comes with a how to play insert, tip guide, and two unopened "Return to Ravnica" booster packs for an MSRP of $14.99.

The Selesnya Conclave relentlessly seeks to grow its ranks—both outward and upward. Use the populate ability to multiply your largest token creatures, then go forth and spread the good word. Grow big or go home!

"Selesnya Surge" comes with two rares: A foil Grove of the Guardian and a Wayfaring Temple.

The "Selesnya Surge" intro pack revolves around abusing Populate, a new mechanic from "Return to Ravnica" that lets you copy any creature token you control. You'll have to first have some creature tokens in order to copy them - which is why there's multiple Seller of Songbirds and Call of the Conclave.Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage can help you create creature tokens and also populate.

Trostani’s Judgment is a potential two for one that has the ability to turn the game around in your favor. It's Wayfaring Temple though that's arguably the MVP of this intro pack because it can create an army of threats, including 8/8 Elemental creature tokens with vigilance from Grove of the Guardian, and continues to grow larger in the process.

Like all intro packs, you'll want to upgrade "Selesnya Surge" before bringing it to your next duel. The included insert suggests adding Entreat the Angels to create a horde of 4/4 flying Angels, the awesome new Armada Wurm, and Selesnya guild leader, Trostani, Selesnya's Voice to populate every turn.

A few other cards that might be worth including in the deck are Thragtusk, Restoration Angel, Collective Blessing, and Worldspine Wurm.

"Selesnya Surge" in its native form is a slow deck. Although in the late game it'll gain momentum, unlike the "Golgari Growth" intro pack "Selesnya Surge" is rather susceptible to removal. If your opponent responds to your Populate spell by destroying your creature token you'll be out two for one. When it works, you'll overrun your opponent with a massive horde of creatures.

If the "Selesnya Surge" intro pack doesn't fit your play style, then one of the four other "Return to Ravnica" intro packs might:

"Selesnya Surge" will be available on retail shelves on October 5, 2012.
