Return to near seasonal temperatures to make short work of overnight snow

Last night’s quick hitting blast of wintry weather dropped a nice little shot of snow on the Denver area but it won’t be hanging around long. While temperatures rebound today and Thursday, there is the potential for a more significant storm Friday.

Most locations around the Denver area saw from 1 to 4 inches snow last night into the early morning hours today. In its wake roads are very wet and some spots will be slushy. Some patchy fog will be possible through about 9:00 a.m.

Skies will be quickly clearing this morning and we will enjoy mostly sunny skies throughout. Winds will be calm for the most part, picking up a bit this afternoon, particularly in north areas.

The snow cover will help to hold temperatures down a bit but most locations will still see high temperatures in the mid to upper 40s. That will make short work of the snow and most of it will be gone by the end of the day.

Thursday is going to be virtually balmy with very spring-like temperatures. Mostly sunny skies will be above as we head for highs in the mid to upper 60s.

The weather wildcard waiting in the wings is the Friday and Friday night period. Models are not in good agreement and offering a variety of solutions from little precipitation to a significant snow event.

The ECMWF, one of the more reliable models, is pointing toward a front pushing in Friday afternoon coupled with a good deal of moisture and upslope flow. Conversely, the GFS keeps most of the action away from the Front Range.

The two offer quite different alternatives for the weather Friday night and without any sort of reasonable consensus, it is tough to pick a favorite. For right now we would recommend keeping a close eye though on this system. We should have a much better grasp in the next 24 to 36 hours as the event gets closer.
