Retro barbershops thrive on West Seventh in St Paul, Minn. (Photos)

Four old-style barbershops dot a two mile strip of busy West Seventh in St. Paul, Minn. The stand-out is 7th Street Barbers . From the store front façade, antique barber chairs and whip-smart owner, Peter Klein, 7th Street Barbers is both retro and front-and-center.

Diverse clientele drive the business. Fathers and sons compete for chair time with patrons loyal to the business well before Peter bought it in 2009.

Peter, a master barber, is also an historian. Versed in the fantastic details of medieval barber- surgeons, Peter regales customers with colorful tales of his profession. The most visible symbol, the red and white swirling barber pole, once represented red for blood-letting and white for the bandage to be applied!

Peter also collects antique tools of his trade and uses the shop as a showcase for many. The backward clock that hangs on the wall, just one example, is a perfect timepiece in mirrored reflection.
