Retirement talk makes Manny Pacquiao chuckle, really

HOLLYWOOD—Truth be told, I don't know if Manny Pacquiao will fight one more time or 10 more times.

Frankly, I don't think he does, either, at this point, a couple of weeks before he fights Antonio Margarito at Cowboys Stadium.

Pacman didn't really take the bait when I told him he did not look the “shy, retiring type” as he exited Coach Freddie Roach's Wild Card Gym Monday evening.

But, as he made the short walk out of his usual post-workout dining spot, Nat's Thai Restaurant about two hours after dining with fans, friends, brother Bobby and conditioning/nutrition coach Alex Ariza at his side, I did make the 31 year old Fighting Congressmanny laugh about the topic.

It was Roach who recently suggested that the day is looming when the all time great fighter will hang up the gloves to concentrate on his political and business ambitions.

“Manny,” I said, “you can't retire.”

“How come?” Pacquiao said, offering a quizzical look.

“Because, Manny, if you retire anytime soon, then I can't afford to retire.”

SEE ELIE SECKBACH WALL TO WALL MANNY COVERAGE, INCLUDING PACMAN THE DOG.

The gym was closed to the media and public but Pepper Roach, ex-fighter turned trainer and Freddie's brother, reported to me that trainer and fighter went through a fast paced 12 plus rounds on the mitts.

Pacquaio laughed and then took off in his black Mercedes Benz.

Veteran Filipino sports announcer Chino Trinidad is among those who detect a difference in the Pinoy Idol's preparation for and attitude towards this particular fight.

Trinidad, who has known and covered Megamanny for 15 years, is not the worrywart type but he wonders if the fighter has lost some of the awesome fire in the belly he's shown in the past.

Except Trinidad describes it another physical way.

“I don't see the flaming embers, the fire in the eyes, I usally see with Manny this close to a fight.” Trinidad said.

“I had often told him he should leave the dabbling in politics until he was done with boxing and now I am wondering whether he is thinking more about politics than his upcoming bout.

“Back then, Manny told he's just driven to help people. But, in recent days, he's been constantly on the phone hearing from all these barangay elections back in Sarangani. All the captains from all the barangays are ringing him up asking for funding and Manny does not delegate his duties. He likes to be in charge of it all.”

Don't write Trinidad off as some casual observer. He's spent most of the past four or five days with Pacquiao, including on the 12-hour flight which brought them from Manila to LAX Saturday night.

Trinidad was a little amazed that Pacman rode down to San Diego after Sunday Mass to make a basketball game appearance tied to the Barona Casino interests. By strict order of Coach Roach, Pacquiao did not play but was limited to coaching.

“Now Manny thinks he's Phil Jackson or Pat Riley,” Trinidad said, laughing.

Pacman was also given the key to National City, south of San Diego, and accepted a proclamation announcing that it was Manny Pacquiao Day in San Diego.

As far as he's concerned, Trinidad wants to see Pacquaio retire at a positive point in his ring career.

“I want to see Manny go out on top, to go out with a bang,” Trinidad said. “I don't want to see him quitting boxing, just another old fighter drooling on himself.”

As for me, I will resist the temptation to do my karaoke version of “What Kind Of Drool Am I.”

Rica Trinidad? Opps I think Recah Trinidad, right? That old man who once said..MANNY CAN'T GO HOME ANYMORE INTO WAITING ARMS OF HIS COUNTRYMEN. I don't trust him just like Ronnie Nathanielz, who will write just to get paid. And his son Chino? You can say like father like son.

i was against pac going to politics. based on how things are going, i won't be surprised if this is his last fight. sure, i want to see him fight floyd. but i have to admit, he has a heart to serve the people. he may not have the education, but maybe, just maybe a heart is enough.

True, Margo can not be counted out, he's still a very dangerous opponent compared to Pacquiaos' previous opponents that he had beaten badly. Margo is an opponent with a stronger force and boxing ability to be reckoned with. However, although, Margo has the obvious physical advantages going into this mega fight, but he also have weaknesses that Pacquiao can exploit to win the fight. His slow forward approach when delivering power punches can be countered by Pacquiaos' fast side to side punches delivered to target in bunches coming from all angles and this maybe the ultimate difference between winning and loosing, but the tangibles that everyone can not ignore is the fact that Margo is highly motivated to score a big win against the Mexicutioner in front of thousands of live Mexicans audience in Dallas Cowboys Footbal Stadium on November 13, 2010 and coupled this with Pacquiaos' insufficient training and preparation due to injuries and personal disruptions could be the big difference for Margarito to stand tall with referee raising his hand as the winner. Although, Margarito seems to have all the advantages going into this fight, I still pick Pacquiao to win by knockout in 7th round; however, if he fails to knock him out in 7th, Margarito can perhaps knock Pacquiao out in later rounds or can win by a convincing unanimous decision mainly because Pacquiao will run out of gas in the later rounds due to lack of training and preparation and being smaller among the two pugilists. At this stage, no one knows in definite terms that the congressman is an absolute winner, but the odds are in his big favor to come out as the winner, but as the saying goes, "game ain't over yet 'till the fat lady sing". Again, Pacman by TKO in 7th, if not, he may loses this fight and may decide to hang up the boxing gloves for good at his congressional office.

    @ Michael Marley
We, sensible readers, would like to appeal to you to, please, regulate the comments posted here because this has now became the breeding ground of hatred, and discrimination. There are several comments which are very derogatory, degrading, insulting and discriminating. We also request that Tagalog and other languages should be banned. We know that we have our freedom of expression and we are in the free country but, this has been severely abused. It's now high time to do something in order to minimize if not eradicate senseless and derogatory comments here in "The Examiner". God Bless!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mr. impossible 1 year ago

what you wanted is quite impossible.. why don't you just let it be and get a life rather than being a kill joy? I say let the rage go on, the passion flow, hatred stream.. this is a way for people to have an outlet for emotions..

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

ban all languages except english? you know that's not possible right? you must be stupid just by suggesting it

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

It is reasonable to ban derogatory comments full of vulgar words. I, for one encourage my kids to join this forum so that they could get additional knowledge, especially for their thesis in school. My kids got good grades when they reported about child and woman abuse, the effects of different sports to the society and the responses from different cultures and races. They mostly based their thesis from the examiner article. Now, I prohibit my kids to open any examiner article because of the very vulgar words, full of hatred and degrading comments. If the comments can not be regulated, we, readers, must be sensible in posting responsible comments and avoid using vulgar and derogatory remarks for the sake of our kids.

It's a forum you weirdo stop whining about getting your fag-gy feelings hurt. The first amendment is here to protect impolite speech not polite speech. The world doesn't revolve around your sensitive feelings, pussy. Until someone threatens someone's life with credible information, freedom of speech must be protected, you fag-got.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

I'm surprised with your argument about impolite speech. As I mentioned, this freedom of expression is severely abused. The posts here can be read even by grade schoolers and some students also obtain additional informations for their school reports from this page or other sport pages. This is also mentioned by another reader.
The law states that: No person shall be denied of life, liberty or property without due process of law nor shall any person be denied of the equal protection of the law. It is very clear that everybody has the right to enjoy his freedom under the bounds of the law and we are equally protected by the law not just those impolite and/or vulgar speakers.
Try to browse the pages of Fight Hype, Max Boxing, ESPN, Sweet Science, Cruelest Sport, Opposing Views, Pro Boxing Fans if you can read vulgar language, derogatory and degrading comments. If these pages were able to regulate the comments, there's no reason why Examiner can't do it.
I prefer reading the examiner articles because they are more detailed and they also publish testimonies from the readers.

Quote, "All the captains from all the barangays are ringing him up asking for funding and Manny does not delegate his duties. He likes to be in charge of it all.” Well, why NOT. He did that the first time and most all of his delegations ripped him off. First, the couple who rifled his bank account in LA for 200K, then his delegates who ran his campaign the first time around where he lost, they pocketed the campaign money. Then his former manager who instead of paying for his US taxes, pocketed the same, then... the list goes on. Now they have to beg him personally, no more people to handle his money. He learned his lessons many times over.

Godspeed and Godbless d Pilipino people

Manny ran for congress because he wants to help. Manny knows that there is really a budget allocation for his constituents but it did not reach them. Manny’s work is for this money to be able to reach the poor. He does not need more wealth because he already has plenty of it, because of his hard work as a boxer. Mabuhay ka fighting congressman!
