“Retirement” Means Time to think Futuristic for Local Art Photographer

 By Rhonda Parker

St. Augustine - For “Photos on Canvas” Owner Ray Dominey, retirement means he has more time to devote to his business at 35 Hypolita Street in the historic downtown, but also “time to follow dreams.”

Best known for his art photos of old doors, picturesque street views and vistas of the Old City - and for the transfer of photos to canvas for a breathtaking, painting-like affect - Dominey is now thinking “wave of the future” with design of what he describes as “personalized QR Code art”.

“Think Pop Art and Andy Warhol, but with a futuristic twist,” he said.

Dominey spent 22 years as a technical director with Sally Corporation, a Jacksonville company known best for their black light and Amitron amusement park rides. He becomes animated himself when discussing QART Art.

Similar to barcodes scanned on most products for sale now, QARTS are increasingly used by businesses and individuals to promote their products and websites, or even personal pages through social media networks like Facebook.

Dominey’s innovative idea takes it a step further with design of a personal QART, which becomes a work of individualized art when displayed in custom colors to match décor, and sizes that range from a small wall plaque to painting-like canvas large enough to display above a fireplace. Like other QT codes, the QART can also be scanned by friends or potential customers with their mobile smart phones, who will then be directed to a web address. The personalized QART and connective web link can be updated at any time.

QART art can be displayed in businesses, used on business cards, or one innovative use Dominey discussed was as gravestone art that could be scanned from the gravesite and linked to an online memorial tribute and Bio for the deceased.

“As far as practical uses, the possibilities are endless,” Dominey said.

The QART can also be transferred to canvas, but also to tile - which leads to another of Art On Canvas’s latest offerings: photos on tile. Sizes from 4” x4”s and 12” x 12”s, to even giant-sized wall displays with multiple tiles.

Dominey is currently working with local website developer Lauren Rains to design web-ordering for the QART Art, which is already on display in the Hypolita shop gallery.
