Erik Ortiz of the New York Daily News reported yesterday that retired chemist Joseph Callahan, 69, was arrested for "multiple felonies" after police found an "arsenal" of firearms and explosives in his home in Fairfield, Connecticut.
But is he a criminal? Or a hobbyist?
Callahan is in the "skeet shooting hall of fame," and he worked for both "chemical company DuPont as well as gunmaker Remington Arms," as explained by his attorney, Richard Meehan.
As Ortiz reported,
"State environmental officials surveying the scene confirmed that at least some of the chemicals found appeared to be for his rocketry hobby."
During a press conference posted by News 12 Connecticut, Police chief Gary Macnamara said that the investigation was prompted after a person from "out of state" asked police to conduct a "welfare check" on Mr. Callahan. After the police conducted the check, they were apparently called back later in the day by Mr. Callahan, who said that there was a burglary in his house.
"...during the process of discovering whether or not there was a burglary, our officers observed a significant amount of unidentified chemicals...the resident of the house appeared to be out of sorts in a way and we transported that individual to the hospital so he could be evaluated."
The materials in the house prompted "local, regional, state and federal authorities" to "swarm" the house, as reported Monday by the Courant. Callahan "was charged with 11 counts of illegal possession of explosives, six counts of first-degree reckless endangerment and one count of manufacturing bombs." Leslie Yager of the Patch reported,
"The explosives were described as larger than a firework, with explosive power above an M-80, but below a stick of dynamite."
Police "inventoried and seized 274 firearms," but it is unclear why those items were taken, as there seem to be no charges related to the firearms. His attorney said,
"He’s a gun collector, and they're all registered. They’re all legal.”
So, the bottom line is that a man who has no criminal history was arrested for his "rocketry" hobby? According to his LinkedIn profile, Callahan belongs to the American Chemical Society, is a Lifetime Member of the NRA, and National Republican Committee, as well as the National Skeet and Shooting Clays Association. Perhaps the fact that he is a Republican is really why Callahan was arrested. After all, according to the mainstream media and some elected officials, NRA members are "gun nuts" and Tea Party members are "extremists."
