Resume that takes you from entrepreneur to employee

You took the risk, stepped out on faith and having been running your own business for several years now and loving it. However, the economy is shaky, you want to get back on your feet and the corporate world is looking pretty great at this time. But how do you avoid scaring off potential employers with your entrepreneurial spirit?

There are many of you who are successful consultants and business owners, but want to transition back into the corporate world and not sure where to begin. One of the mistakes that I have seen most frequently is where entrepreneurs understate the value of their work and contributions because it has been their own company.

Like any well-written resume, the entrepreneur-to-employee resume will still need to be targeted, achievement-driven and compelling. Whether you have been an entrepreneur for five years or fifteen years, these same resume writing principles apply:

TIP#1: Lay aside your ego – while it looks impressive to list titles like CEO and President on your resume, you may come across overqualified if the positions you are targeting are in the VP or professional manager level.

SOLUTION: Evaluate your career progression, conduct research of professionals with similar backgrounds, and determine a more appropriate title for your current level of responsibilities. Imagine for a second if it was not your company, what would your position title be?

Here is a good example of how human resources consultant/business owner presented her entrepreneurial stint on her resume. Note: A breakdown of five key projects with impressive achievements were listed along with the experience.
