Whether you live in Dallas, Denton, or Dubai-chances are, unemployment has touched your life. As a result, you probably have formed some opinions on how companies should be treating job seekers in this down economy. It's human nature to want to be treated fairly and with dignity in all aspects of life-especially the job search. However, I think it's important to note that recession job searching does not equal kind treatment. A couple of general stats to think about before you think about putting a voodoo curse on companies that are not responding to you:
1) Depending on the type of job and the site it was posted on, the average position receives anywhere from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand applicants for every job-many of whom are not even qualified to do the work. Why is this important to you? Because this means that there is a good chance that the recruiter may never even get to your resume when it's buried in the middle of the stack. And this leads me to point two…
2) The average corporate recruiter is being asked to do more with less, so in addition to his/her recruiting duties, she is probably also managing employee relations, performance management, investigations, etc. In the immortal words of Regis Philbin: “I’m only one man!”
3) Murphy and his law do exist in job searching. While many of you have created resumes that work well with the various Applicant Tracking Systems employed by most companies, there is still room for error. It’s possible that your resume is non-viewable, your application gets eaten by the company dog, or some other act that is out of your control happens to keep your resume from getting to the right place. When applying online, it’s hard to tell if a real human ever sees your resume at all!
Ok, so you have decided not to wreak havoc on the companies who have rebuffed you-that’s great! But how the heck do you get them to notice you? A couple of simple things:
1) Find a hiring authority on sites like LinkedIn, Twitter, or Facebook. And then reach out!
2) Call to follow up on your application. Remember-they are probably getting a ton of phone calls too, so be prepared to sell yourself in the 30 seconds that you get on the phone.
