The 4th annual Nick Smiles on the Fine Arts 5k was held on Saturday morning in near perfect running weather. 137 runners completed the race, which raises money for the Bishop Shanahan Fine Arts Department in memory of Nick Mullin, who passed away in 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. Family and friends of Nick gathered on Saturday morning to remember Nick and run for a great cause.
19-year old Ryan Markle was the male champion in 18:16. In second place was 23-year old Brendan Flood in 19:49, and third place 17-year old Andrew Gorr with a time of 21:01. 13-year old Noelle DiClemente and her mother Kate DiClemente were the top two woman finishers in 22:31 and 22:32 respectively. Long time friend of Nick, Katie Diorio finished in 30:43 after helping out with handing out t-shirts and starting the race after the official start.
Elementary school runners from Montgomery School participated in the race, and kids' running clubs are welcome! There are trophies for each grade presented at the end of the race. If you missed the race and would like to donate, please visit www.nicksmiles.org.
