SAN FRANCISCO—July’s San Francisco Triathlon at Treasure Island champions Ben Collins of Seattle and Canada’s Tenille Hoogland won today’s Inaugural San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz.
The event was presented by Tri-California Events, Inc.
Collins finished with at time of 2:12:17, slightly four minutes ahead of Kyle Leto.
Hoogland, an Olympic hopeful, clocked in at 2:32:38. The Olympic hopeful barley edged out pro champion Amanda Stevens who finished 18 seconds later.
The course consisted of a 1.5 mile swim from Alcatraz to Marina Green, a 25 mile bike ride, and 7 mile run—including the brutal sand ladder.
At 7:00 a.m. the California Hornblower stopped just off the southern tip of Alcatraz and over 1,000 triathletes dove into the chilly waters.
“Get in, get out,” said Christopher Altman “Don’t worry about the sharks!”
The 39-year-old San Francisco native got out of the water in just 46 minutes and crossed the finish line at 4:27:11.
"The most challenging part was the sand ladder at mile 4.5,” Ben Collins exclaimed “I’ll definitely be back to compete next year. Special thanks to Tri-Cal Events president Terry Davis, K-Swiss, and all of my supporters.”
