Insomnia VGC held their first Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 tournament of 2014 last night. As additional hype for the event, Insomnia offered up a bonus prize of a free entry into April's Texas Showdown fighting game championships. That brought out competitors from all over the city and even out of city comp. Local favorites like Gene "Buckethead" Flowers, Rubeks, and AVG JDogg took on players like GoX, and AB Fonzo.

While JDogg and GoX were upset early, Fonzo would go on to knock Rubeks into losers. AJ faced Gene in the other semifinals, but was unable to make it to the winners final. Gene would then defeat Fonzo to advance to the grand finals. On the losers bracket side, JoeyH had a nice run to make it to the 5th place match, but would fall to Rubeks. GoX was even more impressive. After losing in the first round, GoX ran through his losers bracket side, making it all the way to the top 4. But he too would be knocked out of the tournament by Rubeks. Rubeks would get his revenge on Fonzo as well in the fight for 3rd and advance to the grand finals. However Gene quickly ended any thoughts of a comeback as he took the first set of the finals 3-1.

Congratulations to Gene Flowers for winning the tournament and winning the sponsorship for Texas Showdown! But that wasn't all! Insomnia's owner, Chris Unclebach, was so moved that Houston players took first and second that he went ahead and sponsored Rubeks as well! So congrats to both Gene and Rubeks, and see you in April!
