Sunday July 25 was the 5th running of the Chisago Lakes Triathlon. This race has a Sprint Distance (0.25 mile swim, 21 mile bike, 3.1 mile run) and a Half Iron Distance (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run). Over 1,300 people started the race (808 in the sprint, 542 in the half), as well as a number of relays in either distance.
In the Half Iron Distance race, local St. Paul pro triathlete David Thompson took first in a wire-to-wire win. He finished in 3:55:24 with the fastest swim (24:40, 1:16 pace) and bike (2:08, 26.1 mph) overall. He was chased by Joshua Riff from Edina, who finished second in 4:07:59, and Matthew Payne who finished in 4:11:00.
On the female side in the Half Iron race, Jackie Arendt from Madison, WI came to town to blow everyone away. She finished in 4:27:44, ahead of local about-to-go-pro Cathy Yndestad. Arendt and Yndestad were neck-and-neck through the swim and bike, but then Arendt put some space between her and Cathy with a 1:24:31 half marathon split. Yndestad finished in second in 4:36:11, and Maggie Fournler from Onalaska, WI was third in 4:45:39.
In the Sprint race, local Patrick Parish was first in off the bike. He ran the fastest 5K split of the day (16:48) to take the win by over a minute in 1:15:17. Josh Blankenheim from Duluth was second in 1:16:25, and Scott Penticoff from Woodbury came in third in 1:16:38.
On the female side, Diane Hankee came out of T2 with about a 30 second lead over Jenny Wilcox. But Jenny put the hammer down on the run, and ended up with the fastest female run split (19:46) and an overall win by over a minute. Wilcox finished with a course record of 1:24:43. Hankee finished second in 1:26:06, and Tracie Kent (1:28:40) held off Marlo McGaver (1:28:51) by a few seconds to take 3rd overall.
