Restored Roanoke Passenger Service

Virginia DOT and Norfolk Southern made an agreement to improve Amtrak Virginia passenger service between Lynchburg and Roanoke which has not operated in 34 years. There has been no date as to when train service will be operating. The service will be operated by Amtrak under contract with the VA-DOT.
Before service can begin the Lynchburg-Roanoke route needs to have its tracks realigned, upgraded along with signals and communications on the route. In addition, clearances need improvements on the route with new stations, platforms.
A new passenger yard and servicing facility along with new station at Roanoke is also to be built.
