Restaurant parts ways with lesbian waitress after anti-gay tipping scandal

Dayna Morales, a restaurant server of 10 years, made national headlines after receiving an anti-gay remark on a receipt along with a non-tip from customers at a restaurant where she worked. Weeks later, Morales now finds herself unemployed according to a report by Philly.com on December 9.

Back on November 14, Morales reported that customers denied her a tip at the Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, NJ because of her sexuality. Not only was she denied a tip, she said one of the customers insulted her by saying she thought Morales was a boy. She reported that the customers left a message on the receipt that read: “I’m sorry but I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle and how you live your life.”

The alleged anti-gay treatment led to an outpour of support for Morales who received donations from supporters in which she claimed to donate to a Wounded Warriors program, as Morales was a former Marine.

But a follow up investigation by a reporter from NBC 4 out of New York contradicted Morales’ story as the customers who were clamed to have left the anti-gay message provided proof that they did leave a tip and not only that, they were supporters of same-sex marriage and said they would never leave such a message.

Reports also confirmed that Dayna Morales was a former Marine due to dishonorable discharge and as her character came into question, the Gallop Asian Bistro suspended Morales while they conducted their on internal investigation. The results of the investigation have led the restaurant to part ways with Morales. In a statement left on their Facebook page, the owners of the restaurant state:

“Despite news reports to the contrary, this is not a simple, straight-forward matter and we have conducted our own internal investigation. The results of that investigation are inconclusive as to exactly what happened between Ms. Morales and the customers that night. However, in light of the investigation and recent events, both Ms. Morales and Gallop Asian Bistro have made a joint decision that Ms. Morales will no longer continue her employment at our restaurant. We wish her well in the future.”

The publicity has been bad for the restaurant’s business. As for Morales, supporters who made donations to Wounded Warriors have started to be refunded.
