After a short hiatus, the Restaurant of the Week returns with the best barbecue spots near Disneyland. It’s certainly heating up and starting to feel like summer around Anaheim, CA and what goes better with summertime than BBQ? The best spots around offer smokey-goodness and southern-sweetness.
Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que has all the sweet deliciousness of a visit to the deep south -- pulled pork, slow-smoked ribs (smoked in-house in a HUGE smoker!), barbecued chicken, and, of course, lemonade served in a canning jar -- just like you’d get from Lucille’s own front porch! Their sweet sauce is finger-lickin’ good! For families, Lucille’s can be a little pricey, but they do offer family-style and large group menu selections, for the perfect picnic feast! (The ribs alone are worth it, guaranteed!)
Lucille’s has multiple locations, with the nearest one* being right off the 57-North freeway in Brea (about a 15 minute drive from the park). Get off on the Imperial Highway exit and turn right; it will be on the immediate left.
The real diamond-in-the-rough, though, is Scottie’s Smokehouse in Orange. A true hole-in-the-wall joint, its located in an inconspicuous strip mall, next to a nail salon, but once you walk inside, you’ll smell all the reasons why location doesn’t matter. Their pulled chicken sandwich with cole-slaw is mouth-watering and dripping in their ultimate bbq-sauce that’s a little tangy, a lotta sweet, and a hint of heat. The mac n’ cheese is a local legend - nothing too fancy, but a classic done right. The real gem is the meatloaf, which includes their ultra-smoky brisket. Its a daily special that’s not listed on their menu, so ask for it by name -- don’t arrive too late, or it will all be gone! (Pair it with their smokey beans for a great kick!)
Scotties* is worth the 10-15 minute drive straight off Katella. Take Katella east to Glassel. Turn right and Scottie’s is about a block down off of Collins and Glassel on the left. Don’t blink, or you’ll miss it, and you don’t want to miss it!
